|Alan Duncan MP, a senior Conservative,
confirms he is gay (29 Jul 2002)
Shadow Foreign office minister Alan Duncan MP today confirmed in an interview that he is gay; he is the first Conservative MP ever to have made such an admission. It seems he has the full support of Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith.
It is much too soon, in my view, to judge whether this move is a signal that the Conservative Party has genuinely changed because the Party has still to reach (or publish) conclusions on the policy reviews apparently taking place at present and those announcements it has made on policy matters relating to 'gay' issues indicates precious little movement to date; the significance of this development is, after all, only that Mr Duncan will not immediately be hounded out as has happened to others in the quite recent past. Nevertheless, I do not wish to be 'curmudgeonly' in my comments - it is a significant step. However, there is still a distance to go.
