Text of a letter dated 18th October 2001, received "From the office of the Leader of the Opposition" in response to a letter sent to Mr Iain Duncan Smith:

Dear Mr Cameron

Mr Duncan Smith has asked me to thank you for your recent letter and to reply on his behalf. He has carefully noted your comments. I can assure you that despite the media coverage given to his comments, what Mr Duncan Smith actually said was that Section 28 would be reviewed so as to gauge its effectiveness. As, quite naturally, with all policies. At no time did he suggest scrapping or abolishing Section 28. Like you he believes that the protection of children must remain our central objective.

Thank you again for taking the trouble to write.

Yours sincerely

Ian Philps Correspondence Secretary
