CURRENT AFFAIRS AND POLITICS
Current Affairs I like to keep abreast of what
is happening in the country and in the world generally. I read various newspapers
and magazines, of course, but there are some excellent websites which I use
from time to time, specially if I want fuller reports on occurences reported
only briefly on television or in the press.
Politics I am interested in politics generally
and enjoy debating on political topics, although I don't see any need to
'fall out' with anyone who holds views which are significantly different.
With civilised discussion, I think those who take part should be willing
to learn about others' perspectives and perhaps even learn to understand
them better, if not to share them. I am slightly to the right of centre in
my views and, until Monday 17th September 2001, was a member of the Scottish
Conservative and Unionist Party. I resigned following the election as Leader
of the Conservative Party of Mr Iain Duncan Smith and his selection over
the weekend since his election of an almost uniformly very right-wing Shadow
Cabinet. As the European Union now plays a major role in British politics
and life generally, I have started a new section to hold basic information
about the EU, initially the names and national flags of each member state
